Alicia Hampson - Computer Science & ICT, Teaching & Learning, Stretching the More Able
Home Campus, Huddersfield Road, Oldham, OL4 3NY
As ICT moves to Computer Science I have found a significant gap in teacher skills and confidence in many colleagues. Coming from a programming background myself – I was an SQL programmer before becoming a teacher - I personally have relished the change, however for many it is a real worry. It is for this reason that I identified my main specialism as Computer Science, and find this an opportunity to support and guide colleagues during this transition phase and beyond.
I am currently Head of Computer Science and ICT at Waterhead Academy. I have held a variety of whole-school roles, ranging from e-learning to home learning strategies. I am also part of the extended teaching and learning team within the Academy, providing coaching and support for staff within the teaching and learning context.
I have facilitated programmes in various schools, as well as doing school-to-school support for ICT within the Rochdale authority. I have also supported and led inset at my twin daughters’ primary school in Trafford in order to support the school in developing teaching and learning in Computer Science within the primary curriculum. I have led in-house CPD at Waterhead Academy, delivering sessions on ‘what makes outstanding’, ‘Effective home learning’, ‘Effective marking and feedback’ and ‘Using effective feedback to make visible progress’. Furthermore, I have led subject based inset on programming skills with a particular emphasis on the python programming language.
In August 2016 I was awarded an NPQSL after successfully completing the course led by the National College for Teaching and Leadership.
